DAY 186—You’re still reading your opus…

Yesterday, I gave you a laundry list of details to worry about while you were reading the draft of your opening chapters. Today, forget the details and look at the big picture.

As you read, ask yourself whether the narrative hangs together. Have you repealed the laws of cause-and-effect and, if so, did you intend to do that? Even when you write flashbacks…especially when you write flashbacks…you must know the path through time that you want your reader to travel.

Look for spots where the plot drags. Why? Have you stuck in too much descriptive detail? Have you held back as you wrote the big scenes, afraid of being too dramatic or emotional? Did you fail to follow through on those big scenes, letting the characters absorb the enormity of what just happened?

More importantly, ask yourself the biggest question of all:

Are you enjoying this book?

If not, don’t despair. This is your chance to figure out the problem and fix it.

Now, either write today’s page, or know that you’re going to need to catch up eventually.
